July 23 - 29, 2011 ~ Hudes Tarot

Hudes Tarot
Susan Hudes
US Games, 1995

Received as a trade from my first Aeclectic Tarot Trade Train.  It was a fun experience.  A bit unnerving.  I ended up choosing the Hudes and it was sent from Sweden!  How fun.

The card stock is "typical" and nothing special.  The deck art is quite interesting.  The use of the marbelized papers worked in some cards and did not work in others.  When it worked, it was spectacular.  The King of Swords and the 9 of Swords are two examples of where the style of paper really added to the image.  When it didn't work, it was really a distraction, like the 3 of Cups.  Another feature is the use of maps as backgrounds in various cards.  That worked in every instance and really gave an interesting perspective to the card's meaning. One card that really stood out was The Hanged Man.  The faces in the tree really struck me when I came up in a reading.
As a reading deck, I am a bit on the fence.  Interestingly, the "New Deck Interview" indicated a luke warm relationship.  It started out a bit challenging, but accuracy greatly improved during the week.  One thing is that it gives very sombre and serious readings.  Even the fool has a look of resignation rather than open wonder, as if he knows that trials and tribulations await him.  I think that for serious situations, it would be a good deck.  It isn't going to give a smarty pants reading.

I will keep the deck because these kinds of decks are necessary.  I don't really have one that is so serious as this one.
